Screaming Frog is a UK search marketing agency drawing on years of experience from within the world of SEO and PPC — and the team behind the SEO Spider, the crawler that has become standard issue on practically every technical SEO desk in the industry.
Founded in 2010 and based in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, Screaming Frog delivers its search expertise to companies worldwide, running SEO, PPC and integrated search campaigns for clients including Disney, Shazam, Which?, the Alzheimer’s Society, VoucherCodes.co.uk and Bullion Vault. Every campaign is bespoke, and the team works alongside in-house and third-party agency teams rather than around them — with what they describe as “an honest, transparent and accountable approach in everything we do.”
The company’s roots run back further than its founding date. Graeme set up one of Britain’s earliest search marketing agencies in 1998 and hired Jason as employee number one; Dan joined in 2005, and the agency was eventually acquired by a pan-European marketing group. In 2010 Dan struck out alone as a consultant under the name Screaming Frog — a name taken, improbably, from a frog that stood up for itself after being cornered by two cats in his back garden. Later that year the three regrouped around “common values and a belief of starting something new, fresh and remarkable,” incorporated the business, and opened a first office in central Henley — close enough, as they tell it, to walk to the pub.
Development on the SEO Spider began the same year. It was designed to be used by an experienced SEO to help collect data, identify technical issues and provide a base for onsite SEO recommendations — the tool the team wanted for their own client work rather than a product built for a market. Released in free lite and paid premium tiers, it found an SEO community wrestling with exactly the same problems, and passed 100,000 downloads on “no marketing, no advertising and just the power of word of mouth.”
What followed was a steady decade of shipping. A Mac build in 2011 widened the audience; a UK Search Award arrived in 2014 for helping inspire and revolutionise the UK search industry; Moz’s industry survey ranked it a top-five paid SEO tool in 2015. The Log File Analyser launched in 2016 to make sense of how search bots actually behave on a site, and 2018’s hybrid storage engine let the Spider crawl at a scale no desktop application had managed before. By 2017 the company counted nearly forty “frogs” on staff.
Today the SEO Spider and Log File Analyser both ship for Windows, macOS — Apple Silicon and Intel — and Linux, maintained by the same agency that still uses them every day on client work. That is rather the point: the tools exist because the consultancy needed them, which is why the team can concentrate on recommendations and optimisation rather than on data collection.
